Crossing The Line The Baltimore Banners Volume 1 Lisa B Kamps Books
Kamps is a much better writer than one sees in typical romances-- her prose is lively and fun. This was the first book by this author that I have read, and I enjoyed it. AJ is feisty and willing to work for what she wants, and she and Alec had a good semi-competitive vibe going on, but one which stayed on the healthy side. Alec also seemed like a decent guy. His help and sympathy with her migraines was nice. And I prefer non-manwhores, so the fact that he was circumspect with the ladies was also attractive. The reason I am giving it 3.5 stars rather than 4 was that, despite liking the characters, I felt like there were too many unanswered questions left hanging. For example, why is Alec so private in the first place? It seemed a little extreme.... and since the story hinted that he had his reasons, it was odd not to be told of those reasons by the end of the book. The motivation for his unwillingness to admit his feelings was also a little unclear. We know he had dated a woman who was essentially a hockey groupie a few years prior, but how did it end? Was she the reason he's reluctant to get emotionally involved with AJ? And how and why did she show up at just the wrong time? Another loose end relates to the false tabloid story that AJ had been tarred with a few years earlier. What was this, and how did it influence her relationship with the Banners? This is mentioned several times but it never is explained.
In sum, although I enjoyed the process of reading Crossing the Line, in the end I felt like it was missing some key motivating material.
That said Kamps has a lot of potential as an author-- her writing sparkles, and her characters are interesting and seem like fundamentally decent people. So I'm totally willing to read the next few in this series to see where she takes us.

Crossing The Line The Baltimore Banners Volume 1 Lisa B Kamps Books Reviews
I liked how the book started out. The tension between AJ and Alec was smouldering. I didn't care for AJ though. I like strong, witty women and she wouldn't fight back or stand up for herself when misogynistic jerks were talking down to her. She just frustrates me. There were also many times she had the opportunity to talk to Alex about her piece on him, but of course she didn't. Overall, it's a good story, but it could have been better if AJ wasn't so annoying.
I really like sports books especially ones about hockey. I'm from Michigan so I was hoping to see where these two went throughout the state but we didn't get to see that at all. There wasn't much hockey in this book. Besides this the story itself fell a little flat for me. I felt like there was a ton of back and forth between the characters. I also felt like AJ didn't give Alec much time to talk or say anything. There was a story there waiting to blossom but it kept getting stopped by other things.
For starters, I'm a lover of hockey and for me personally I loved Lisa's writing style. So you're probably wondering why not give 5 glowing stars? It was because there were a lot of questions that weren't answered at the end of the book. Otherwise, I loved it. I'm from Baltimore and I happened across this because of the name and then...well hockey! AJ is a really strong character to me and I felt like she needed to be. I like my heroines to have a backstory that's a little dramatic and comes out on the other side of it better than when she went in. My problem was...it didn't delve into it. The hero of the story...well he's described as being a player but we see something a bit different. I loved that. I don't like my male leads to be trolls the whole books and then they're redeemable the last 10 percent. This is a great start.
This book had a great beginning, but these two have ZERO communication skills. There are some unanswered questions - like why interviews are such a big deal to him. I also had to wonder at the setup of the banquet - seriously? I've never been to such a shindig, but I'd expect people would get their pictures taken as they walk in and not after eating and drinking and dancing for hours. If the characters had more personality, this story could have stayed fun. Also, to apologize for "never" taking someone out when they've been hanging out for three weeks is kinda silly. I'd read the next one in the series, hoping they get better.
I loved the beginning, but towards the middle it took a huge downward spiral and never recovered. The female lead ended up acting like a child, and the male lead had no substance. He was just blah.
There was really no interaction between players and we never really got to see the team in action. It's a hockey book, I was expecting to see some games thrown in not just practices. I expected more.
What had me almost do a dnf was the situation that happened between AJ and Alec that made them split up. Alec wanted to talk about what happened at the rink, but AJ just packed up and left and said "oh well there's nothing between us so what happened doesn't matter". And then she has a freaking fit because Alec "goes" back with his ex. If AJ was an actual adult and had her big girl panties on and TALKED to Alec then none of the stuff that happened in the end would've happened. She has never heard of communication apparently. Grrrr. And Alec never explains why he did what he did with Brandi (the ex). It just seemed really weird. Gave two stars because the beginning is good but the rest didn't make for a good story.
A sweet romance that will make you want to read more from this author. This is a good Sports Romance that will entertain you til the end. The story line at first, will have you thinking that it's going to be a typical Sports Romance, but then the author surprises you with twists that makes it a very unique and different read. You will enjoy the storyline and how well the story develops throughout the book. You will also love the characters in this book. They all have these personalities that are easy to like and resignate with. You will not be disappointed with this novel, for it has sports and some humor with romance. I think you should give it a whirl yourself, you will definitely enjoy this one. I voluntarily read a copy of this book.
