I LOVED this book! I knew from previous books in this series that I would love Nikolai and Vivian's book. I was prepared for the large gap in their age and although I think it a little weird...love is what love is and age doesn't understand the heart. So as long as she is a legal, intelligent adult she can date, love and marry whom ever she wants. Now the reason behind my 4...it was really the last chapter that ticked me off...first off the Romero angle...he's in bed with Maksim?!?!?! Really?!?!? It just all came together a bit too fast to really understand and accept...and finally...****SPOILER ALERT...STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!****
Maksim is Nikolai's father????!!!!! WHAT! Ok I can accept that...I can even accept him not bringing it up at the wedding...he's such a good guy not wanting to ruin Vee's wedding...but the book ended without giving vital information dang it! How long did Maksim know? Who was Nikolai's mother to Maksim...she was only 16 for pity sake...but that didn't even register? He lived years in an orphanage where he was abused regularly and only escaped by violent means but he doesn't want/need to know if his "father" new about him before or during this time? WELL I DO!
But if I'm honest that is such a small part of the book for me I'll amend my review to a 4.75 ;-)

NIKOLAI Her Russian Protector #4 edition by Roxie Rivera Romance eBooks Reviews
Ok so in Nik and ViVis story they is a lot of drama. I mean a lot. It deals with more of the seedier side.
Now someone made some complaints about this book and here's my rebuttal. Yes they did not go into detail about Niks confession to the priest. Did that effect the story in any way ??? NO it didn't. I think there was enough darkness in this book that the author didn't want bombard us with his criminal history.
Some one said ViVi was acting like a brat. I say no she was acting like a normal female when they pissed off
Another person complained that ViVi forgave to quickly. As a participating Christian yes she is going to forgive. I mean she prays before she eats. Despite her messed up child hood she has turned into one of the sweetest forgiving and loyal person in the group
And to the person who said they didn't get their HEA. They got each other that was their HEA. It wasn't perfect but it is enough for them for now. Who knows what the future brings. Maybe the author gives them the perfect HEA in another book
So having said my piece. I tried not to put any spoilers in. Although I'll admit when geting a new book sometimes I look for spoilers. But in this book it's better to just go in not knowing
This is a fabulous series. As always the love scenes Are Hott and steamy. I know I'll read this book and this whole series over again and again.
I did think books 2 & 3, Dimitri and Yuri, were better, say 3 1/2 - 4 stars. But now, I feel like the series went backwards in quality with this one.
My reasons for just an okay rating
1) The 17 year age difference does give me an uncomfortable feeling, particularly since he met her and started looking out for her when she was 12, so there's a father figure to lover type transition which feels icky. Granted with Dimitri and Yuri there is also a big age gap between the h/H, but in Nikolai it is the biggest and my discomfort level has risen as a result.
2) The series is formulaic. You figure out with the 2nd book, "Dimitri", that each of the gals will get paired off with one of the Russians. And with each gal, there is a criminal relative who appears to place them in danger and only the Russian boyfriend can save them
3) The wedding night was an opportunity for a special moment and it seemed an unnecessary scene of miscommunication.
4) It was very unrealistic that Nikolai would give a damn or spend any effort on trying to locate the other girls in white slavery. I know the author is trying to ennoble the character, but this clashes with the characterization of a smart, savvy mobster. Nikolai would only be using resources on an unprofitable rescue mission as well as incur the wrath of whoever the mob was that controlled the sex trafficking. So while it's awful that this happens, it didn't make any sense that he'd try to locate the women unless there was a more personal tie to it.
5) The story line was all highs of danger and not enough calmer moments of relationship building like there was in Dimitri or even Yuri's story (loved that 1st date with the dining truck).
On a more positive note, I do like how the heroines in these stories are not spongers and don't have TSTL moments. They are independent, smart and can carve out careers for themselves. Lena from the Yuri story is probably the best example of this. I noticed that there's a vol 2 to the Nikolai story, so perhaps that will be an improvement.
After meeting Nikolai and Vivian in the previous books, and knowing they had an unconventional past (though the specifics were not revealed fully until this novel), I could not wait for their story. And their story did not disappoint. Like the previous books, we have some crazy life-threatening action happening, mysteries to be solved, etc. With Nikolai being a mob boss, this is no surprise. But the hows and whys and what's going to happen next kept me on my toes. I loved the suspense and action. I worried right along with this group of friends how it all would turn out.
Along with this action is a quite touching love story. Nikolai's past is quite awful, and Vivian's is no picnic. So learning how their lives intersected, and now seeing how their hearts have woven together gave me all the feels. There is a special love there that age and history cannot stop. And the way the author even handled certain aspects of their relationship was really creatively done, even frustratingly, but it worked really well. I genuinely liked Nikolai and Vivian and couldn't help but root for them.
Plus, we get to see the rest of the gang, and a few others I want to get to know, and I loved them all. This is a great series, and Nikolai and Vivian's story is a fantastic addition. I'm truly looking forward to catching up on the rest of the series.
Overall 4.5 Stars
