This book is absolutely adorable. Being as old as it is, the pop-ups are very delicate and won't blow your mind compared to modern pop-up books. It's a very quick read; I wish it was 3x as long because I love Edward Gorey's work so much.

"There once was a family whose name was MacFizzet" so begins this magical book right on the front cover.

"The Dwindling Party" is among the most intricate of pop-up books, each double-page aligning a well-drawn display with Edward Gorey's tale of an Edwardian family fatally indifferent to each other. The MacFizzets--a husband, wife, and five children-- put on their best to visit the varied distractions of Hickyacket Hall. Mark well the expressions of those two creatures prancing atop the pillars of the entry gate and look at them again as small Neville turns away under a full moon on the back cover. It is that kind of book.

Inside, the MacFizzets are so distracted----say the words---they fail to notice that oldest son Lambert has been abstracted by a creature lurkng behind the ornamentally pruned shrubberies. The drawing shows an utterly expressionless family while the pop-ups include the menacingly erect shrubberies and a pull-tab revealing the creature who caught the first MacFizzet.

Gorey's verse carries this tale cleverly along & the pop-ups gets increasingly intricate, including a tower, a crypt, a lake, and the gazebo. The book is sturdy, with the pop-up construction and tabs able to withstand reasonable use for years. My copy is over ten years old and although often read, looks almost new.

Reader Alert This may be enjoyed by some children who are attuned to such settings through Harry Potter's world. It will be most passionately intriguing to Edward Gorey's many admirers, who perhaps are somewhat older.

A rarer book, this is not inexpensive, even at used prices. Readers appreciating Edward Gorey's artistry and irony who happen on "The Dwindling Party" may want to pounce like a Hickyacket Hall creature on this treasure, put it on a high-enough shelf, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy the varied distractions of an exceptional book for years to come.
Lovely, just what I wanted.
We wore this book out when my children were young, eventually throwing it away. My oldest son was so dissappointed to learn we no longer had it. I purchased this one for his 31st birthday. He has 2 sons of his own he wants to share it with. He will be so surprised when he opens the gift for his birthday Nov 29!!! The book is in excellent condition!!!
I thought this was going to be a more exciting book. Disappointing! But I kept it.
Loved this book when my son was a little guy. He is now 39. I bought it for him as a reminder of how much fun the book is. He was blown away by it and will keep it for his kids (one day). So many fun pop ups!
