I've spent the past few weeks re-reading the first four books in the Star Crossed series because A) this is one of my top favorite series and I love these books and B) I wanted to refresh my memory on the characters and events because it had been a while since I had read them the first time. At the time I finished the series when it was freshly published the fourth book Endless Magic was supposed to be the final book but the series has grown to include several more stories and I couldn't be happier. The end of Endless Magic (SPOILER ALERT) finds Kiran, Eden and Avalon have fought to the death and overthrown the evil king Lucan and freed the kingdom from tyranny and oppression to once again open the magic between all races so the immortals can truly be Immortal once again. All seems right with the world as we watch Eden and Kiran FINALLY get married and we get our happily ever after. But what happens AFTER the Happily Ever After? Fast forward three years where the Reluctant King picks up and we find a very BORED Avalon, a new love interest and a brewing threat to this newly freed kingdom. I didn't know I wanted this book at first and I was skeptical that it would be as good as the first four but Higginson didn't disappoint me with this hilarious look inside Avalon's mind as he finds love for the first time and tries to find his place in the grand scheme of things.
Avalon was one of my favorite characters in the first four books of this series. He was funny, witty, strong and courageous. He was the leader of the rebellion against the former king and watching him as the new king was equal parts funny and melancholy. He's bored on the throne because he has nothing to fight for. Where his days once consisted of making plans and delegating orders he now has to plan parties and hob nob with the people of his kingdom. It's not until Amelia Cartier struts into the palace all grown up and knocks the breath from his lungs. She turns him on his head and wakes him up in a lot of ways and makes him see things in a different way. Amelia was just a young girl in the first set of stories in this series. The pampered and favored niece to the once tyrannical king Lucan she's all grown up now and turning heads with her stunning beauty. Amelia was the sweetheart of the series for a long time, and now that she's grown wants to prove she's not a child anymore and that she's able to take care of herself. There's a connection between her and Avalon but she can't allow herself to give into it for reasons that almost broke my heart. She's been in love with Avalon for years and he nearly blew his chance by dismissing her once upon a time but he fights tooth and nail to win her hand. I was just as wrapped up in Avalon and Amelia's romance as I was Kiran and Eden's and loved every painful minute.
The Reluctant King was a very steady paced story balancing the romance between Avalon and Amelia while also building the foundation for this new threat. An old enemy returns to exact his revenge with plans to steal the crown for himself and stops at nothing (literally nothing) as he kidnaps immortals and humans for his twisted experiments. I love a little suspense with my romance and this one sure packed a punch as I watched with bated breath as all hell broke loose and several of my favorite secondary characters' lives were left in limbo in the final pages of this book. I started out not knowing if I would enjoy this one as much as the others and ended up loving almost more-so! There's drama, romance, suspense, action and not to mention getting to see more of the sickeningly sweet duo of Kiran and Eden and what life has brought them in the last few years. I'm absolutely excited to pick up the next book and find out where this story is headed now!

The Reluctant King The StarCrossed Series Rachel Higginson 9781481260725 Books Reviews
4.5 stars -- *happy sigh* Which is weird, b/c there is still so much turmoil with that ending. But Avalon....Avalon Avalon Avalon. I was worried about reading a love story about a character that I couldn't help but see as a brother, b/c of course I made myself into Eden (and thus got to marry Kiran, *sigh*). Would I be able to get behind it? I mean, obviously I wanted Avalon to have his own HEA, but would I be able to fall in love with him after seeing him as the annoying big brother for so long?? And I guess it won't be quite the same as all my other book boyfriends, but holy wow did I want to be Amelia in so much of this book. So yeah, Ms. Higginson was definitely able to expand Avalon past that brotherly role we've seen him in, and into mega adorable, please kiss me like that please, hero of the day. Seriously. So delicious.
I had initial skepticism about Amelia being the love interest of our delicious bad boy...and most of that is b/c in Hopeless Magic when we're first introduced to her, she's described as maybe 11 or 12 (to their current 16-17). So I wondered when this book would be set. And while there definitely seems to be a continuity error surrounding Amelia's age, the gap of 3 years from the end of Endless, and the closer age gap in this book melted my fears. We all knew her sweetness, but OMG did I love her feistiness in putting dear Avalon in his place.
As is in keeping with the rest of the series, the action and suspense part of the plot was beyond compare. I'm still sick thinking about damn Terletov, wondering what exactly he's trying to accomplish. So yeah, totally LOVED getting back into the action of the world with its new challenges and bad guys.
The humour was beyond compare -- not surprising given it is Avalon. LOVED the interactions between him and Eden again.
And finally, and most importantly for me, the love story was just so freaking adorable. And heartbreaking at times.
Yeah, fan girling all over the place over here, but what else did you expect? I just love the worlds Ms. Higginson builds, and the characters that make me wish were real.
Rachel Higginson will forever be my favorite author after the first 4 books in this series. I have never fallen in love with a series so fast. The only problem with this new addition to the original plot, is that the pacing is very slow. I mean I get it, there are a lot of characters now. The main characters are trying to run a whole kingdom and shes trying to make us feel that by reading. But theres a point where its like "okay I get it. lets get on with the plot". I feel like by the time there was someone threatening their family, I was already considering putting the book down for a day I had more patience. It just doesnt have the same drive the original 4 books did. I think a lot of it was the point of view the story was told in. I liked the twin brother. Not enough to be in his head for 300 pages however.
